The Ministry of National Defense held a meeting hosted by its Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo on June 10th to review the implementation status of national defense reform in the first half of 2020. The participants of the meeting were the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Chiefs of Staffs from each military branch, Deputy Commander of the ROK-US Combined Forced Command, Commander of the Marine Corps, Commissioner of the Military Manpower Administration, Vice Minister of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration and other top military commanders as welll as high-ranking officials of the MND. Upon a stringent examination, the participants recognized the need to strongly implement the Defense Reform 2.0 consistently and spread shared understanding on the direction of the reform. Taking security threats and conditions surrounding Korea’s national defense into account, the MND has pushed ahead with the Defense Reform 2.0, which is incorporated into the all established defense planning documents such as National Security Strategy Guidelines and National Defense Policy. Specifically, the Defense Reform 2.0 inherits tenets of defense reform promoted by former governments, which were rooted on the National Defense Reform Act of 2006. The Defense Reform 2.0 distinguishes itself from previous plans in its emphasis on execution feasibility.
