70 years since its founding in 1949, the Republic of Korea Air Force (ROKAF) is undertaking various missions utilizing state-of-the-art weapon systems, including stealth fighters, air tankers, and unmanned reconnaissance aircraft. Despite continuously expanding its mission and role, ROKAF faces challenges in adapting to future warfare. In response to these issues, ROKAF has formulated and begun to promote its future aerospace power development plan, labeled “Air Force Quantum 5.0.” Today's security environment, as recognized by ROKAF in its Air Force Quantum 5.0, is not only composed of traditional threats but also includes: diversification of transnational and non-military security threats such as terrorism, natural and man-made disasters, and infectious diseases; exchanges between military branches in the traditional battlefield domains; evolution of the concept of warfighting into the space, cyberspace, and electromagnetic domains; and rapid changes in science and technology in the era of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Accordingly, ROKAF intends to redefine its future role to proactively respond to capricious security environments. Specifically, as its first step towards developing future aerospace power, ROKAF presented three main influencing factors: the diversification of security threats, the evolution of the concept of warfighting, and the advancement of science and technology. Based on these driving factors, ROKAF derived and defined its future role.
