<Background and Purpose>

In association with the 2028 Air Force Relocation Plan of Daegu Base in preparation for the future logistics environment, this research aims to make future-oriented proposals for the advancement of current depot maintenance systems.

   ◎ Following the introduction of new weapons systems as well as growing requirement for performance improvement and unplanned maintenance on top of existing demand, the Air Force has been experiencing technological advancement in aircraft overhaul as well as changes in maintenance systems.

   ◎ Maintenance requirements for each aircraft model have been altering according to the Force Operation Plan. While the demand for the maintenance of aging models, such as F-4/5, has decreased, models like KF-16/F-15K have been continuously in need of performance improvement as well as life extension.

   ◎ A development plan for maintenance depots must take into account the technological capacity of the 81st depot as well as its surrounding infrastructure. Thus, the existing requirement for facilities and equipments of the 81st depot must be re-examined in the context of the Daegu Base Relocation Plan.


<Research Results>    

Cost Analysis for the Air Force Maintenance Depots Specialization

   ◎ Conceptualized the specialization of the Air Force maintenance depots, and suggested possible options for its implementation

       - A total of 512 alternative ways to operate maintenance depots are described in this research. They are based on organizational/functional categorizations derived from the current system, as well as potential functional integration of different organizations.

       - A survey was conducted to assess each alternative in terms of cost and effectiveness

       * A BSC(Balanced Score Card)-based survey method was employed for the comprehensive consideration of various factors such as finance, client relations, internal process, learning and development, etc.

   ◎ Proposed the ways to enhance the effectiveness of the Air Force depot maintenance system following the shifting logistics environment.

       - The research describes short- and mid-to-long- term management plans based on the cost analyses as well as survey outcomes.

       - The research also lays out the ideas to apply advanced technologies from the 4 th industrial revolution to cater to the future logistics environment.
