The Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA) and the Heritage Foundation co-hosted the 7th KIDA-Heritage Joint Conference on June 28th in Washington, D.C. this year. Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the ROK-U.S. alliance, the conference aimed to identify future-oriented policy recommendations to enhance defense cooperation through a joint research project.
The Korean contributors to the project consist of 8 experts from KIDA. The American contributors were recruited from the Heritage Foundation, Brookings Institution, Hudson Institute, Korea Economic Institute of America, U.S. Naval War College, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and RSIS from Nanyang Technological University. These experts conducted joint research on six specific areas of defense cooperation including extended deterrence, ROK-U.S.-Japan trilateral security cooperation, defense technological-industrial cooperation(DTIC), joint command and military exercises, maritime security, and space security cooperation. In designated pairs, the authors examined the achievements, opportunities and limitations of bilateral cooperation and presented ideas for growing the ROK-U.S. alliance in Korean and U.S. perspectives.
The final report titled, "The Next 70 Years: Future Paths for the ROK-U.S. Alliance and Defense Cooperation" is available online in English and Korean.
